It turns out that the voting machines in Clark County, Nevada are serviced by SEIU members. I don’t know how common this is throughout the nation, but since SEIU is the Service Employees International Union, a union which often represents government employees, I guess it’s not all that surprising that SEIU members would be servicing some of this nation’s voting machines. The problem is that SEIU is widely perceived as being a highly partisan organization.
According to the Washington Examiner, the SEIU has given half a million dollars to the “Patriot Majority PAC” which has spent $1.3 million dollars so far on attack ads against Harry Reid’s opponent, Sharron Angle. Nationwide the SEIU plans on spending $44 million, almost all of which goes to promote Democratic candidates or to attack Republican candidates. So you can hardly look at SEIU as being a neutral party.
The reason that this is an issue right now is because voters in Clark County, Nevada have been reporting irregularities while using voting machines there. Joyce Ferrara, her husband, and several others found that before they could cast their ballot for Sharron Angle, the machine had already cast it for Harry Reid. The Registrar of Voters appears to be claiming that they must have let their fingers rest on the touchscreen too long after making a selection… that the touchscreen is … well, touchy. However Ferrara seems to be reporting that Reid’s name was checked before she had an opportunity to select a candidate. Of course it could just be a coincidence that the voting machine selected the candidate which the SEIU is backing. However, I haven’t heard any reports of voters claiming that Sharron Angle’s name was pre-checked prior to a voter making a selection.
